Pierce Brosnan remembers Sir Roger Moore on Variety

Four-time James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan wrote a remembrance of former 007 star Sir Roger Moore, who has passed away last week, on today's issue of Variety. In the article, the GOLDENEYE star reflected on the impact Moore's career in his life, long before he succeeded him in the role of James Bond.

"Roger was the man — the world was at his feet. He was most gracious to the children and myself," Brosnan wrote, remembering his childhood fascination with THE SAINT, the time his late wife Cassandra Harris appeared as one of Moore's Bond girls in FOR YOUR EYES ONLY and the day when Moore visited him on the set of GOLDENEYE at Leavesden.

"We fell in love with a magnificent actor," Brosnan continued. "Never forgetting the audience, never letting the begrudgers in, Sir Roger enthralled the world for many years as Bond. Sir Roger played it to the end with impeccable good manners and a wicked sense of irony that was born of years upon the stage."

Pierce Brosnan and Roger Moore are often considered by the moviegoers as the ones who offered the most comical portrayals of Ian Fleming's character onscreen. At the same time, both actors were well known for their philantropic activities off the big screen: Moore as an UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Brosnan with many wildlife associations.

Pierce Brosnan stars in Final Score, opposite SPECTRE's Dave Bautista

Pierce Brosnan will lead the cast of Scott Mann's film FINAL SCORE, which will start production next Monday in London. He is joined by former wrestler Dave Bautista, who played the villanous Hinx in SPECTRE, the latest James Bond film starring Daniel Craig as James Bond.

The plot deals with the seizing of a soccer stadium, where an hostage situation takes place. In this scenario, an ex-soldier feels compelled to save one of the victims, the daughter of a fallen comrade.

Pierce Brosnan is currently filming the TV series THE SON and has finished shooting THE FOREGINER, with Jackie Chan and directed by GOLDENEYE's Martin Campbell, who will also direct him in an adaptation of Ernest Heminway's ACROSS THE RIVER AND INTO THE TREES.

Pierce Brosnan and Martin Campbell team up for Across The River and Into The Trees

Great news for the GOLDENEYE fans: Pierce Brosnan will be directed once more by Martin Campbell in an adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's book ACROSS THE RIVER AND INTO THE TREES.

The man who directed the 1995 blockbuster will team up with the actor who had his 007 debut on that film for the third time, as another movie involving Campbell and Brosnan, titled THE FOREGINER is also being shot.

The production for ACROSS THE RIVER AND INTO THE TREES is set to start in October in Venice, based on a 1950 book dealing with subjects like ageing, love, and war.

Martin Campbell previously directed another GOLDENEYE star, Izabella Scorupco, in 2001's VERTICAL LIMIT.

Trevelyan's Mainframe - FILE: Simonova, Natalya / Twenty Years Removed

How very predictable of you, to now choose Miss Simonova’s file for review. I’m starting to believe this organization gave you too much credit, friend. Again, your codes check out and access shall be granted. The following is what we have in the database for your subject, twenty years removed from her GOLDENEYE appearance...

This transmission begins with some preliminary information on subject Natalya Fyodorovna Simonova, former Level 2 programmer for the Russian Space Forces (Severnaya installation). Since the regrettable burning up of the Mischa and the deactivation of the Petya satellites, Simonova has been able to stay a distance away from any major frequencies, so to speak. She is a surprisingly tough one, as she is reported here as having a hand in the death of our lady Xenia Zergeyevna Onatopp and several other associates in 1995. With that in mind, it is important to understand that she remains a prime target and enemy of the Janus Syndicate.

It is noted that after about four years away from the silver screen, Izabella Scorupco found herself in quite a pickle as Helena Kurcewiczówna in the 1999 Polish historical drama film, WITH FIRE AND SWORD. Helena finds herself in between the love of a Polish knight and a Cossack Ataman during the Khmelnytsky Uprising of 1648. The film would go to be a financial success despite being the most expensive Polish film ever made (at the time of its filming).

Data here shows that just a year later, Miss Simonova would assume the role of Monique Aubertine in the American action-thriller, VERTICAL LIMIT, directed by none other than GOLDENEYE’s own Martin Campbell. Scorupco would deliver a notable performance in the film, working well together with the familiar director. Speaking of which, we have a file on him as well, if you’re at all interested in the future…

The next entry in this file is dated year 2002, where Scorupco would become Alex Jensen alongside a star-studded cast of Christian Bale, Matthew McConaughey, and Gerard Butler in the post-apocalyptic action fantasy film titled REIGN OF FIRE. According our sources, the film was set in the year 2020 England, with the reawakening of dragons threatening human existence. REIGN OF FIRE would go on to be nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, and by the Festival de Cine de Sitges for Best Visual Effects and Best Film Awards. I suppose I should give credit to where credit is due. Don’t get used to it, though.

The mainframe suggests that by the year 2004, Izabella would shift her focuses to the horror genre, starring in EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING as a character named Sarah. Though noted here, it seems as though this film ended up being a financial and critical failure. Ah, see. Now, that’s more like it! But, alas, I digress. From the year 2005 onward to today, Izabella Scorupco has made several more small appearances in Swedish, American, and Polish film.

That concludes entries on the main file, so I suppose we should move on to the few side notes on the subject. The list here is no where near as full as Bond’s was. It has been marked that in 2011, Scorupco revisited her pre-GOLDENEYE singing career, duetting with Swedish musician Peter Jöback, in his single Jag Har Dig Nu. She would also star in Jöback's later short film titled, La vie, L'amour, Le mort. Following that, it is noted that by the spring of 2012 Simonova would host the series, Sweden's Next Top Model. However, it is reported here that she did not continue for a second series.

In conclusion, unlike her British counterpart, Natalya Simonova seems as though she has successfully assimilated into life away from us boys with toys. As a successful actress, model, singer and female icon, Izabella has also amazingly been able to become an equally successful wife and mother. The information provided should suffice for any apprehension techniques with additional information to be accessed directly through me personally, if deemed absolutely necessary.

Well then, that’s it for this subject’s file, old boy. I must admit though, I’m going to seem rather shot with my wrap up this time around. After all, reviewing these entries has left me with quite a hankering for strawberries…

Trevelyan's Mainframe - FILE: Bond, James / Twenty Years Removed

I might have guessed… This transmission shall start you off, then? So be it. Your codes are in order and you may proceed. This is what we have for our subject, twenty years removed from his GOLDENEYE appearance...

According to the data compiled on this mainframe, our James Bond has been quite the busy man since stomping around the Cuban jungle exactly twenty years ago. After the second GOLDENEYE satellite was destroyed (complements of Double-0 Seven himself), Mr. Pierce Brosnan has reached many more career heights, still meeting and surpassing the expectations of his fans to this day. Now then, let’s get into this, shall we? Of course, three more Bond escapades would unfold following GOLDENEYE including, TOMORROW NEVER DIES, THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH, and DIE ANOTHER DAY. After a solid performance in all four Bond films, James Bond would be recast and the series would see a reboot, leaving Pierce Brosnan somewhere out in the cold by 2003. Due to Pierce’s climbing age, he would be removed from the role and James Bond would once again dawn a new identity without him. With a brief sour taste in his mouth, Brosnan would move on from James Bond, continuing to grow and grace the silver screen in fresh and new directions.

Now, what should precede the report on Brosnan’s Bond tenure? I suppose we should start where Pierce Brosnan would become Julian Noble, the main character of the motion picture THE MATADOR in 2005. This lead role would earn our Bond a handful of award nominations, spanning from the Golden Globe Awards to the Irish Film & Television Awards, among others. The film would garner a fan-base of its own and rightfully so, or so I’ve been told. Next, our files seem to suggest that his next large outing would arrive in 2008, with MAMMA MIA! hitting theatres in mid-July of that year. Adapted from a West-End/Broadway Musical of the same name, MAMMA MIA! showed fans a different side of Pierce Brosnan and his performing skill. With his familiar charm he did quite well, playing the possible-father role of Sam Carmichael. Though Pierce Brosnan was questioned (and slightly teased) for his acceptance of this musical role early on, he gave a memorable performance just the same. Again, so I have heard.

Data entries then pick back up with THE GHOST WRITER, dropping in February of 2010. As Adam Lang, Brosnan would again rack up the award nominations that year and give yet another gripping, on-screen performance. Now, call me fickle, but let’s skim ahead. Bits and pieces here and there… Ah, now we come to the most recent collection of our intelligence. Surely, no mainframe has been compiled even remotely as efficiently, but I digress! By 2014, Pierce would embark on crafting a character within an action film that would nearly mirror the days of the Double-0 Section of MI6. As retired agent Peter Devereaux, Piece Brosnan would channel his inner agent from years passed. THE NOVEMBER MAN would serve as a platform for Pierce Brosnan to give his most notable performance to date, since his first outing as James Bond. Boy, it just warmed my heart seeing good ‘ole ‘PB’ shooting, punching, and blowing stuff up (all the while looking damned cool doing it)! This section ends with a note of, “See that movie, GOLDENEYE fans”.

There seems to be a healthy bunch of side notes collected in this file that perhaps I should relay, as they pertain to the subject quite heavily. From 1997 to 2000, Pierce Brosnan worked with organizations such as the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) for several join ecological causes. Also noted is the fact that Brosnan has been an ambassador for UNICEF Ireland since the launch of the "Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS" Campaign in 2001. Several links to Greenpeace are also listed. Skills honed since GOLDENEYE include painting, public service, and advisement all in the name of charity and the earth’s health.

In short, your hunch is right. Our Bond has spied, shot, and even sung his way rather far from the world of Bond. Despite great adversities (poverty, losing his late wife and daughter to ovarian cancer, etc), it seems James Bond has become quite the role-model human being. Bond’s path has grown and changed quite rapidly in his twenty years away. Since GOLDENEYE, Pierce Brosnan has become a film producer, decorated actor, television star, entrepreneur, charitable donor, environmentalist, humanitarian, icon, and (most importantly) a devoted husband and father. However, no matter the lengths he has travelled in the passed twenty years, Peirce Brosnan will always be our James Bond, Agent 007.

That’s about the long of it, old boy. No gratitude necessary.
It was the least I could do for a “friend”…

- End transmission, Trevelyan.

GOLDENEYE 20 - Pierce Brosnan as James Bond

As we all know, GOLDENEYE celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2015, so we'll start the celebrations dedicating the month of January to Pierce Brosnan's portrayal of James Bond with stills, clips, trivia quizzes and some of the most important quotes of the then new James Bond actor. Please visit our social media to check out these material on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, with the hashtag #goldeneye20.

Born in Navan, Ireland, on May 16, 1953, Pierce Brendan Brosnan soon felt captivated on the movies and cinema industry as long as he watched his first two movies on a theatre, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and GOLDFINGER, the third James Bond film starring Sean Connery, in 1964. According to him, these two films made him want to become an actor.

After getting small roles in TV series like THE PROFESSIONALS or films like THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY, he gained major popularity in MTM's series REMINGTON STEELE, where he portrayed an annonymus thief with a great passion for movies who ends up assuming the identity of a detective next to Stephanie Zimbalist's Laura Holt.

This series prevented Brosnan to become Roger Moore's replacement in the role of James Bond for 1987's THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS. Introduced to producer Albert R Broccoli by his then wife actress Cassandra Harris (who played a Bond girl in FOR YOUR EYES ONLY), he signed a contract that had to be cancelled due to contractual obligations with MTM after REMINGTON STEELE's run was extended for another season.

In 1994, when Timothy Dalton left the role of James Bond, the producers went back to Brosnan considering, in part, his appeal to the female audience and fans around the world. He was announced as the fifth agent 007 in a press conference held at the Dorchester Hotel in London on June 8.

His portrayal of James Bond in GOLDENEYE, at the age of 42, was caracterized by the adaptation of Ian Fleming's character into the mid-1990s without totally redefining him: "He's still a ladies man, yes", he cooly said during the many interviews he had. His portrayal brought a fresh air to a character almost forgotten by the audiences for six and a half years, delivering the exact dosage of elegance, humor and violence.

GOLDENEYE resulted in an historical success for EON Productions, being the most successful James Bond film since 1979's MOONRAKER. Brosnan played the character in other three James Bond films: TOMORROW NEVER DIES, THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH and the 40th anniversary adventure DIE ANOTHER DAY. He also provided his likeness and voice for the Electronic Arts videogames 007 NIGHTFIRE and EVERYTHING OR NOTHING.
After he left the role in 2004, Brosnan said: "It was a decade of his life that I will always hold dear to my heart and a time that will never be forgotten." He has now a successful cinematic career with starring films like THE MATADOR, LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED and most recently, Roger Donaldson's THE NOVEMBER MAN, whom he also produced. He also plays an important role in activism with his actual wife, Keely Shaye.

The November Man - Review

2014 is coming to its end and this year brought us the return of Pierce Brosnan to a major action movie. Of course that during his post-Bond era he played roles like hitman Julian Noble in THE MATADOR (2004) or the ruthless Tom Ryan from BUTTERFLY ON A WHEEL (2007), but THE NOVEMBER MAN could really signify his return to a spy-thriller in the style of the James Bond movies.

But Peter Devereaux, the retired CIA agent Brosnan plays in this film, is no James Bond. Even when he wears some Brioni suits from time to time and dons some of the grace he showed onscreen through a series of films from GOLDENEYE to DIE ANOTHER DAY, the character is a far cry of James Bond: he has no repair in torturing someone or hurting innocents, his vocabulary is kind of vulgar... in the end, he plays a character in an universe taken from the Jason Bourne films or Daniel Craig's James Bond era - detail: the "girl" is played by QUANTUM OF SOLACE's Olga Kurylenko and the "villain" (if we can call him that way) is played by CASINO ROYALE's Lazar Ristovski (remember him? Kaminofsky, the Russian player on the table).

Peter Devereaux (Pierce Brosnan) escapes of a
death trap set by his former protegée, Mason (Luke Bracey)
The story deals with Devereaux called for one last "mission" during his retirement in Switzerland, where he owns a café over the lake. His colleague and friend Hanley (Bill Smitrovich) informs him that a number of people linked to a Russian candidate Arkady Federov (Ristovski) are being sistematically killed. Apparently Federov wants nobody to remind him or the world about his shadowy past. And the next one on the list is Natalia (Mediha Musliovic), posing as Federov's secretary.

Due to Devereaux's feelings to Natalia, a former lover and also the mother of his daughter Lucy, he accepts. He manages to rescue her from the Russian parliament but she's suddenly shot by David Mason (Luke Bracey), a young agent Peter has trained but is now working for the agency's interests and blindly follows orders from the top. Before dying, Natalia reveals Peter a name: Mira Filipova, a Crimean War refugee who has vital information on Federov's past.

Olga Kurylenko portrays Alice Fournier,
a social worker that gets along in the fight
Following the clues of Mira, Devereaux meets Alice Fournier (Kurylenko), a social worker and the only lead to the vanished Mira. As long as he goes on with his "assignament", Peter must protect Alice, escape from Federov's cold-blooded assasin Alexa (Amila Terzimehic) and from the CIA agents led by his former friend Mason, who are determined to terminate him.

The film got plenty of bad reviews. We can agree it's not a perfect film: the story could have been better developed -particularly the relationship between Devereaux and his protegée/rival Mason - and some scenes certainly don't fit in the story. However, the cinematography is a very positive point, as Marco Beltrami's powerful soundtrack.

Roger Donaldson, who previously directed Brosnan in 1997's DANTE'S PEAK, knows how to add suspense and interesting or unexpected twists that can make this movie very interesting and enjoyable.

In the end, those are good words to describe THE NOVEMBER MAN: interesting and enjoyable. Peter Devereaux is basically the kind of James Bond that Brosnan wanted to portray during his seven-year tenure, a grittier and ruthless guy than the action hero type he ended up playing. And once more he shows he can play this kind of roles.

Martin Campbell to Direct Hunter Killer

Two time James Bond director Martin Campbell will direct the submarine thriller HUNTER KILLER, a film based on the 2012 novel FIRING POINT, by George Wallace and Don Keith. The cast of the film remains unknown, but the GOLDENEYE and CASINO ROYALE director has signed to direct the movie,
HUNTER KILLER will have major locations in Whittier, a small port town in Alaska. The film will deal with a standoff between American and Soviet submarines, much in the style of THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, starring Sean Connery.

The latest major films directed by Campbell were GREEN LANTERN (2011), starring Ryan Reynolds, and EDGE OF DARKNESS (2010), based on the 1986 TV series he also directed.

Brosnan Hopes for Peace as he Promotes The November Man in Moscow

Promoting his latest film THE NOVEMBER MAN in Moscow, former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan hoped for peace between Russia and Ukraine, as he clearified the story of the film has no relationship with the conflict that broke up at the beginning of the year.

"We wrote this story three years ago. So it’s just the confluence of time that we have this movie coming out, and the issues of politics and what’s happening in the Ukraine, and this movie. It was not our intention", the 61-year-old actor said upon his arrival to Moscow. "It is deeply heartfelt moment in history for you all here and for people back in America well to see what’s going on, and I would hope for peace. I would hope that things would get resolved".

Pierce Brosnan stars in THE NOVEMBER MAN as Peter Devereaux, a retired CIA agent brought back in action to protect Alice Fournier, played by Ukranian actress Olga Kurylenko (from QUANTUM OF SOLACE) a key witness involved with a shadowy Russian politican. The film, which he also produces with his company Irish Dreamtime, is helmed by DANTE'S PEAK director Roger Donaldson.

Pierce Brosnan on Gottfried John: "Proud to Have Worked Along Side You"

Pierce Brosnan wrote a farewell message to his GOLDENEYE co-star Gottfried John today on Instagram. The German actor who played General Ourumov in the 1995 film died on Monday aged 72 suffering of a cancer, and the Irish actor took some time to remember their time together with a short post.

"My dear friend... we played in the world of James Bond and traveled the world together to celebrate the success of GOLDENEYE", he wrote. "I am so proud to have worked alongside you (...) Peace be with you, Pierce."

RIP Gottfried John

Actor Gottfried John Dies at 72

This is indeed a sad day for James Bond and GOLDENEYE fans. German actor Gottfried John, known for playing General Arkady Grigorovich Ourumov in the 1995 film directed by Martin Campbell, has sadly passed away yesterday after battling to cancer.

With an incredible onscreen authority few actors could have shown, John made a memorable performance in GOLDENEYE, as a character who pushed the secret agent to a lot of risks and faced him off to a personal situation after the (faked) assasination of Bond's teammate and friend Alec Trevelyan, agent 006.

Born in Berlin on August 29, 1942, John had a troubled childhood on a children's home after his custody has been removed from his mother. He then escaped with the aid of his mother at 18 and moved to Paris, where he worked as a street painter and a construction worker until he went back to Berlin in 1962. It was in 1965 where, after some failed attempts to become an actor, he was finally cast in many stage plays as Robespierre or Richard III.

His career started to grow during the 1970s and 1980s when he moved to Munich and worked for director Rainer Werner Fassbinder in TV's EIGHT HOURS ARE NOT A DAY and films like WORLD ON A WIRE and MOTHER KUSTERS' GO TO HEAVEN.

When he was cast as a James Bond villain in GOLDENEYE, he noted: "I have tried to show the rise and fall of the Soviet Union in one person. In Bond films, the characters are relatively simple - so I have to add an additional dimension to it. I do not play important roles like that with perfect ease."

He would then play Julius Caesar in the 1999 production ASTERIX & OBELISK VS CAESAR, with Roberto Begnini, for whom he won a Bavarian Film Award.

"We'll be remembering Gottfried John as a great character actor, and as a humble person with a great heart", spoke today WDR Director Tom Buhrow.

Pierce Brosnan: "I Loved GoldenEye"

It was a busy week for Irish actor Pierce Brosnan, now back in action next Wednesday when his upcoming action film THE NOVEMBER MAN gets its US release. After a few interviews with hosts like Jimmy Fallon, he quickly talked to fans trough an AMA on Reddit last Thursday.
Replying to his fans, he admitted GOLDENEYE is his favoourite Bond film of the ones he made: "I loved that movie", he said. His other favourite Bond film was, of course, GOLDFINGER, the one he saw aged 11 when he first came to England.

He also claimed he had "no problems with killing 006", the tracherous agent played by Sean Bean on the 1995 film, and that James Bond would kill Jason Bourne "with one bullet". Jokingly, he added that if he would have loved to be killed by Famke Janssen and that he keeps an Aston Martin and the credit lockpick card from THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH.

Asked about his encounters with the other five Bond actors he recalled a meeting with the current 007 Daniel Craig: "I was moving on from Bond and he was moving in. (...) I always wished him good fortune and wanted the best for this man because he's such a fantastic actor, Daniel. And he is a Bond for his time, and will be remembered with such strength of will and charisma."

GoldenEye 007 Face-off With Pierce Brosnan on The Tonight Show

We've seen Pierce Brosnan playing James Bond four times from 1995 to 2002. We also saw him playing James Bond in a few videogames using his voice and likeness. But we never saw him playing a video game with his 007 on it, until now, when Pierce played the 1997 videogame adaptation for GOLDENEYE on Jimmy Fallon's THE TONIGHT SHOW.

"I played it once and shoot myself in the foot", the Irish actor admitted after Jimmy Fallon's spoke about how great the Nintendo 64 videogame was. The showman later challenged Brosnan, who was promoting his upcoming film THE NOVEMBER MAN, to a short round of the game on a big screen set on the studio (Watch on YouTube)

Fallon picked Trevelyan's character to face off Brosnan's digitalized image as the famous secret agent on the Complex scenario. Unable to find a gun and trying to defend himself with the famous "bitch-slap" against the host, he was quickly defeated by a few shots of his rival's DD44 Dostovei.

Janus, The Roman God with the Square Face...

GOLDENEYE is reaching its 20th anniversary next year, and its name hasn't become only popular as a James Bond film but also as a high-sounding name in the videogame industry after the successful 1997 game released for the Nintendo 64 system. While promoting his new TNT show LEGENDS on Reddit, he gave an interesting view about his likeness for the Rareware videogame.

On Reddit, after user judomonkeykyle asked him his toughts about being in the videogame, he replied "It's great! Especially because it's so popular", but he complained a bit about how his likeness was adapted to the polygonal body textures of the 64-bit characters: "I think my head looks a bit square in it".

The actor also commented he still keeps the original Omega watch Alec Trevelyan wears in the film, with an inscription in its back reading "Issued to Sean Bean, 006."

LEGENDS premieres on TNT on August 13th 9/8c. For more information, visit the official site.

Irina Didn't Take The Hike! - Minnie Driver Releases New Album

In spite of Bond's disliking towards the singing aptitudes of Minnie Driver, who played Valentin Zukovsky's mistress and nightclub singer Irina, the British actress and singer will release her new album, entitled Ask Me To Dance.

The announced was made by the actress herself on her Instagram and Twitter accounts, where she also set October 7th as the US release date for the album. "I'm extremely excited", she noted about her third album after Everything I've got In My Pocket and Seastories, respectively released in 2004 and 2007.

Before and after her short appaerance in GOLDENEYE, Driver had roles in ELLA ENCHANTED, starring Anne Hathaway, GOOD WILL HUNTING and MOTHERGOOD.
